The legends

The origins of the church remain shrouded in mystery, but are the subject of a number of folk tales that have been passed down to the present day. The first legend goes as follows:
Many centuries ago, the people of Badia decided to build a chapel on the Col d’Anví, a small hill north of San Leonardo in Badia. During its construction, however, the craftsmen kept injuring themselves. A number of white birds picked up the bloody wood shavings and carried them to the foot of Monte Santa Croce. When the builders realised this, they followed them and... once they reached the foot of the mountain, they were so struck by the beauty of the place that they decided to build their chapel there, recognising God’s will in the destination chosen by the birds.

The second legend relates:
Ottwin († 995), Count of Lurn (Upper Carinthia) and the Pustertal Valley, undertook a pilgrimage to the Holy Land where he fell into the heresy of Arion, which denied the divinity of Jesus Christ. Ottwin returned from the journey in the company of an Arian priest, but soon recognised the error of his ways and withdrew to do penance at the foot of Monte Santa Croce, where he built a shelter and a small chapel.
